I have had a glouriously relaxed three day weekend. I'm making oatmeal cookies at the moment. They're baking so I have time to gush about Om Shanti Om, which I saw on Sunday afternoon. A 12pm show. There was a long line to get in.
The movie starts with a remake of "Om Shanti Om" from Karz - with SRK as Rishi!! So excellent!! The basic plot is boy meets girl, girl is unavailable, boy dies attempting to save girl from terrible death and is reborn as a super-stud actor, in the style of Abhishek Bachchan. There were so many in-jokes! The crowd was howling with laughter at the faux Filmfare Awards preview which had spoofs of SRK's popular movies and Abhi played himself as a spoiled brat!
Kirron Kher was so good as SRK's filmi mother! I love Kirron!!
I was unimpressed with Deepika until the very end, where she plays her double role extremely well. She is kind of blandly pretty and I was glad to see that SRK does not really end up with her doppleganger. There are a lot of dopplegangers in this movie, which pleased me to no end. In fact, it struck me in towards the end that a large part of the second half is very similar to Hamlet. SRK would have made a killer Hamlet. He's a little too old now, sadly.
Anyways, I loved the songs; cried a few times; and laughed a lot. It was a such a good movie. I'll end with two words: Dhoom 5. Yes.
