I've had this movie for ages, but never got around to watching it until now. On top of Bara No Nai Hanaya and Powerful Opponents - two dramas featuring tough guys who are single fathers to adorable daughters - what could be better than three guys who are fathers to one adorable daughter!
I was not disappointed. Akki giving this little girl a bath made me very gleeful.
Things start out with a not too lengthy set-up establishing our three heroes (Fardeen Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Akshay) as players. They love women but not for any length of time. Somebody leaves a baby on their doorstep and they go crazy trying to a) figure out whose she is and b) take care of her.
This was where I stopped watching all those months ago as the "guys can't take care of baby" thing has been done and done again. I'm so glad I picked it back up, though because things start to get good when the three men are so fed up with the little girl that they decide to leave her outside of a church on Christmas Eve!! (How could they?!) They head off to a party but are feeling too guilty to enjoy themselves. When it starts to rain, they feel even worse and run back to the church to check on her.
The little girl is in terrible shape and they rush her off to the hospital. This is the turning point for them. Fardeen Khan even starts praying, which he hadn't done for years, and the other two guys weep in the hallway.
It's a Christmas miracle! (On a side note, I'm not too sure that the film makers understood what Christmas is all about as we were treated to a montage of EASTER quotes about how 'he is risen!')
The three guys vow to take care of her forever! Aw!
We get to see their attitudes change in a very cute way. They see a teenage girl walking down the street with her dad. She's complaining that he won't let her wear miniskirts and our heroes are horrified to hear that she tells her dad that she hates him!! Oh no! They put two and two together and realize that ALL of the ladies they've used are somebody's daughter. There follows a nice song of our heroes apologizing to all of their former dates. It's really sweet.
They're good dads!
Things can never go smoothly for too long, however, as this is the movies. Vidya Balan shows up to claim her baby! Akki is devastated, as Vidya is the only woman he's ever loved.
A flashback tells us that they met at a wedding and he pretended to NOT be a player to get her into bed. Somewhere along the line, though, he stopped pretending and actually fell for her. (So sweet!) Sadly, she finds out about his past and is devastated! He never hears from her again until she shows up to take her baby, which ended up with the men because Vidya's father told her the baby died at birth, but really he was trying to 'save' her reputation so he gave the baby to his secretary to take care of but she didn't want her so she passed her off to her real father. *phew*
Vidya is too pissed off at everyone to think straight and agrees to a stupid bet where she has to find a husband within 7 days or the baby can go and live with Akki and the gang. What else are friends for, yaar? In an inspired piece of writing, Fardeen Khan pretends to be a man named Parimal Tripathi (whose parents loved Chupke Chupke).
When that falls through, Ritesh tries his hand at wasting Vidya's time so her 7 days will run out.
He has to compete with Shahrukh Khan!
An inspired item number!
So, we can guess how things end up - one happy family and two happy uncles.
The underlying message of Heyy Babyy was really sweet: that having a child can change your outlook. And we never got the sense that the men couldn't take care of the baby because they were men. In fact, I was rooting for them to take the baby away from Vidya, who looked much stiffer with her than they did.
I also love that Vidya never doubted her ability to find a GOOD husband despite her single mother status. She and Akki had nice chemistry, even if she doesn't believe in his changed nature until the very end.
And lastly, Ritesh is adorable! Why doesn't he get to be a hero? Hmmm?

Still, I do appreciate parts of the plot. As you note, the way in which the mindset shift of the three is shown hits home. Fardeen as Parimal was hilarious! And I do agree that Ritesh Deshmukh has earned a shot as a lead actor in a major film!
The first 40 minutes of awful diaper jokes I watched so long ago that the rest of the movie wasn't ruined by it.
I certainly think that it would have been a better film if that first 40 minutes had been cut and instead we got some scenes of the guys being cassanovas and if Vidya was introduced much earlier.
